Below is his full speech during the event;
Distinguished guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a privilege to address you today as the Chief Guest at the Closing ceremony of the Kisumu Agricultural Trade Show, under the theme of “Promoting Climate Smart Agriculture and Trade Initiative for Sustainable Economic Growth.” This theme resonates deeply with the urgent need to address climate change while fostering economic development through agriculture.
Climate change is undoubtedly one of the most pressing challenges of our time. Its impacts on agriculture, such as erratic weather patterns, water scarcity, and increased pests and diseases, pose significant threats to food production and rural livelihoods. However, in the face of these challenges, we have the opportunity to embrace climate-smart agriculture as a transformative solution.
Climate-smart agriculture is an approach that combines sustainable farming practices, innovative technologies, and resilient strategies to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change. It seeks to increase agricultural productivity, enhance the resilience of farming systems, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
By adopting climate-smart agricultural practices, we can achieve multiple objectives. Firstly, we can ensure food security by increasing productivity and improving the efficiency of resource use. Secondly, we can enhance the resilience of our agricultural systems, making them more adaptable to changing climatic conditions. Thirdly, we can contribute to climate change mitigation by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and sequestering carbon in soils and vegetation.
At this trade show, we have witnessed firsthand the numerous climate-smart agricultural technologies and practices that are available to us. From conservation agriculture and agroforestry to precision irrigation and renewable energy solutions, these innovations can help us build a more sustainable and resilient agricultural sector.
However, the adoption of climate-smart agriculture requires collective efforts and collaboration among all stakeholders. It is a shared responsibility that involves farmers, researchers, policymakers, and the private sector. We must work together to create an enabling environment that promotes the adoption and scaling up of climate-smart practices. As a legislative arm, we are committed to providing policies and passing laws to support the course.
Additionally, promoting trade initiatives within the agricultural sector is vital for sustainable economic growth. Agriculture not only provides food but also presents tremendous economic opportunities, including job creation, income generation, and market expansion. By facilitating trade, we can enhance access to markets, promote value addition, and foster economic diversification.
It is crucial that we invest in infrastructure, logistics, and market linkages to strengthen the agricultural value chains. We must also promote fair trade practices, ensure market transparency, and support small-scale farmers and agripreneurs to participate effectively in local, regional, and international markets. By doing so, we can unlock the full potential of our agricultural sector and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
In conclusion, the Kisumu Agricultural Trade Show, with its focus on promoting climate-smart agriculture and trade initiatives for sustainable economic growth, has provided us with a platform to explore innovative solutions, exchange knowledge, and forge partnerships. Let us harness the momentum generated by this event and translate it into concrete actions.
Together, we can build a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable agricultural sector that not only adapts to climate change but also drives economic growth and improves the livelihoods of our farming communities.
Thank you, and may we continue our journey towards a climate-smart and prosperous future.
Elisha Jack Oraro
